Class 11-12 --> False friends

A false friend is a word in a foreign language which looks or sounds similar to a word in your language but does not have exactly the same meaning. In the English language there are many words which are false friends for speakers of other languages.
A well-known example is the German word "das Handy", which in English is "cell phone" or "mobile", whereas "handy" means "praktisch, geschickt" in German. Here is a selection of some important false friends which can be mixed up easily. Some of the entries can be a little hard to understand for an unexperienced student, so take care that you are not too confused after going through the list:
